Keyboard test

Press the keys on your keyboard. Each one lights up when the browser receives it, so you can find a dead key, a sticky key, or a key that types the wrong character.

Press the keys on your keyboard. Each one lights up when it is detected.

0 of 85 keys tested. Keys you are holding are dark green. Keys already tested are light green.

Keystrokes are read locally to color the keyboard. They are not saved or sent.

How to test a keyboard

  1. Click the page once so the browser is focused, then press keys one by one.
  2. A key turns dark green while it is held and stays light green after it has been seen.
  3. Switch the diagram between QWERTY and AZERTY if the labels do not match your keyboard. The test still uses the key the browser reports, not the picture.
  4. Reset clears the colors so you can start over.

What the test can and cannot tell you

If a key never lights up, the system is not delivering that key to the page. That can be a hardware fault, a stuck Fn layer, or a keyboard shortcut your system swallows before the browser sees it. If the key lights up but the character in “Last key” is wrong, the layout in your operating system does not match the keyboard you are typing on.

The diagram defaults to QWERTY, which is the usual US layout. AZERTY is there for French keyboards. The page does not record a log of what you typed and does not send keystrokes anywhere. Avoid typing passwords into the page anyway; you do not need to.

Keys the browser may intercept

Some keys normally scroll the page, leave the page, or open a browser menu. This test blocks that behavior for those keys so you can see them, including Space, Tab, and the arrow keys. Function keys can still be reserved by the operating system. Test those in a notes app as well if they do not show up here.

FAQ

Why does a key not light up?

The browser never received it. Check the cable or Bluetooth connection, look for a Fn lock, and try the key in another app. If it fails everywhere, the switch is likely bad.

Does this work with a laptop keyboard?

Yes. Built-in keyboards and USB or Bluetooth keyboards all show up the same way, as long as the operating system sees them.

Are my keystrokes stored?

No. They are used only to color the diagram while the page is open.

I use a US keyboard. Which layout should I pick?

QWERTY. That is the default on this English page. Change it to AZERTY only if your physical keyboard is French.
